another one bites the dust
We all planned on going to Cole's 7th birthday party today.
However, as most of our family is still sick, I decided to spare the Paul household (as well as party guests) a nasty cold and leave the sick ones home to recover on the couch.
So, off I went to party with the healthy 2 year old, thinking that I would have a nice afternoon with only 1 child.......hell, I may even actually get a chance to have adult conversations.

WRONG!
What was I thinking?!
Emmy is extremely attached to me and does not enjoy groups of people staring at her or trying to talk to her........she basically freaks.
She is fine if she is busy doing something in a group or if we are out in a public setting, as long as she is not the focal point of the group.
What was supposed to be a fun party was the exact environment that I know she hates.... all she could do was cry and repeat over and over that she wanted to go bye-byes.
I calmed her down, only for her to get all worked up again when some well intended, innocent person would try to talk to her.........or me.
So I basically carried my 30-somethingish pound child around the house, trying to avoid the party, yet wanting to join the party, not my idea of fun.
We stayed about 20 minutes before I had to leave.....for my own sanity as well as hers.
I like to think that I am in sync with my kids and although I set boundaries, I follow their cues and do not force my feelings on them, I want them to always trust me and know that I will listen to them.
Despite my connection to my kids, I still feel horrible for people around me when these situations come up.
I know that they are trying to help, and when my child's screams are basically telling them to F-off, I can't help but feel crappy about it.
Thankfully, most people I know understand that it is not personal, it is just the way my kids are.......I am the one riding the roller coater of emotions.
So, I left today feeling defeated because this is not the first party that I have had to sneak out of early with one of my emotional kids, and I am positive it won't be the last.
But that feeling was short lived because as we were walking to the car, Emmy hugged me tight around my neck and said "go bye-byes, Mama"........I told her yes and she looked at me and said "Mama kiss Emmy".....and I gave her a kiss.

sick
For the past 4 days, I have been sick....the "can't-get-out-of-bed-if-my-life-depended-on-it" kind of sick.
The kind if sick that Moms can't be.
Luckily for me, Chris was able to take care of the kids while I slept away 2 days.
I was fortunate enough to touch base with pretty much every cold and flu symptom there is, headache, congestion, fever, coughing, body aches, vomiting, diarrhea, sore throat, and earache.
By day 3 (Tuesday) of this mess, I wasn't feeling better and started to worry that I could have strep throat, pneumonia or at the very least, an ear infection, so I called the doctor.
I called at 9am and the office was busy, they could squeeze me in at 4:15 with another doctor, so I took it.
I got to the appointment, told the doctor of all the ailments that I was experiencing and prepared myself for a heavy dose of antibiotics. He listened to me and told me that I was among the many patients he had seen throughout the day with the same symptoms, he checked me over and gave me the diagnosis.
He told me I have mucus.....mucus.

A bad cold with mucus, swollen lymph nodes, fever and coughing.....it just has to run its course.
Naturally, it will run its course through everyone in this house first.

orbs in my room
These pictures were taken last week, I was just taking pictures of the rooms upstairs. I noticed the orbs and they were only in the pictures of my room, I went back to my room to take more pictures, but nothing showed up.

stuck inside with quasi-sick kids....
This cold, wet, raw weather is the pits, which is only amplified when you are stuck indoors with miserable children. It is not their fault that they feel yucky from the cold that has finally started making its way out of the house (yeah!!), but it is still harsh on all parties involved.
I am trying my best to keep them happy, but its not easy, one is whining, the other is crying....once I get that situation under semi-control, they shift to yelling and fighting....its fun.
Yesterday, I thought it would be good for us to get out to the library for our playgroup, like I said, no fevers or coughing, just misery. It was definitely not a good idea. The girls were happy to be out, but they both were in rare form and it was not one of their better days to say the least.
Note to self: Do not expect unwell children to not be out of sorts in a stimulating environment, defer all such activities until fully recovered.
I think that I pushed it with Emmy because later in the afternoon, she had that look of confusion on her face and proceeded to vomit up her lunch, she followed up with some more emissions, which is always unsettling for me. With the help of frozen ice pops and some mama & daddy love, she was OK. She was up and down throughout the night, its been a while since I have had a night like that, but she needed the comfort.
Today she has held everything down........good stuff!
So, here I am today, feeling tired and stuck in with cranky kids.....although on the positive side, they are on the mend.
I do have Bella here with us, so I wouldn't be venturing out anyway, but its going to be a very long day nonetheless!!

Weekend update
Friday
We had Bella on Friday, I kept the kids away from her as much as possible because of the nasty colds that they have. I kept noses and hands clean, so I am hoping that Bella avoids this cold. There are no fevers or coughing, just congestion, sneezing, runny noses and sluggishness....enough to make little ones miserable, as well as their parents.
My mother-in-law stopped in on Friday to visit, she is in town from Naples, through Easter. The girls and Chris were feeling yucky, but it was nice to see her. I am sure that we will see her next week and the house will be in better spirits as we are all feeling better.
I went to see Jay and had my tattoo finished up, it is very pretty, I love it!
I *think* I am set with the tattoos for a while, although Jay seems to think that I will be adding more to my arm and finishing up with a half sleeve.....hmmmmm, maybe.
DJ and I were able to still hang out on Friday night after I finished my sitting with Jay.
DJ saved enough money to buy Monopoly electronic banking edition, so I came home, picked him up and off we went to Target to buy his game. They had it on sale, so he was psyched!!
We grabbed a quick bite to eat and made it home around 9:30, he went to bed and I caught up with my DVR recorded shows.
Saturday
Saturday, I went to work and was there until about 3:30,
it was a regular day, no stress. I did cut my knuckle, something I never do and I had a chance to catch up with Tracey while she was cooking under the dryer!
Hung out with Chris and the kids when I got home.
Everyone was still feeling the effects of the cold that crept into our house, so not too much going on. We visited my parents' house for a while, dinner, bath for the girls, bedtime for the kids and me and Chris chilled....we were both tired.
Sunday
Sunday, I slept in!!!
We had an uneventful morning and got things done around the house.
DJ visited with Corey and Jalen today, Jalen is at least a full foot taller than DJ now....and DJ is taller than me! I need to mention that Jalen is also taller than Corey, so if that is an indication of things, DJ is going to be a big kid! The jeans that I bought him for the school year are already too small for him.....he is definitely going through a growth spurt. The boy eats all the time!
After Emmy's nap, we took the girls to Friendly's then we went to Build a Bear to use the Gift cards that Avery got for her birthday.....I forgot about them! Avery had fun, Emmy hated the noise from the stuffing machine and she screamed, so I took her out.Chris and Avery had fun and I watched them from outside of the store. Even after Emmy calmed down and I tried to go back in, the machine would scare her and I would have to take her out again, the girl can scream!
Presently, the house is picked up, the laundry and dishes are going, the girls are settled in bed and DJ will be getting ready to decompress and get things set for the school week, so things are winding down.
Back to our weekday routines!

Yuck!!
So, little Emmy has come down with a cold and she is a cranky mess!
Her nose is running constantly, leaving her upper lip and nose red raw from me wiping away the goo......despite me using soft tissue and applying Aquaphor incessantly.
Thankfully, there are no coughing attacks or fevers with this cold......however, she has the full on sneezes that bring all of the snot out of her nasal passages and onto her face.
The thick messy stuff that, if I don't get to her immediately with soft tissue and Aquaphor, she will instinctively wipe away and all over her face (and hair.....yes, gross).
OK, then I have to catch that fast little bugger and hold her down to clean the mess on her face, while being gentle on her raw spots and lubing her up with the Aquaphor.....which ironically makes her look pretty much like she has snot all over her face anyway!
The best part of this whole fiasco is me having to drop whatever it is that I am doing at the time that the sneeze takes place, race to get my arsenal of booger destroyers and skin protectants, frantically run to the gross child who is in the process of smearing snot on her face and calmly continue my course of action to ridding her face of all toddler mucus. Not to mention, the ritual of discarding all phlegm paraphernalia and then on to disinfecting myself.
Real fun for an OCD freak like myself.

feels like spring....
Today, the girls and I went to the library for story time and a playgroup, we had a blast!
I have not done a scheduled playgroup since Avery was little, so it was really good to see the girls playing with new friends their age.....especially Emmy, who is with Avery all the time.
Emmy loved dancing and singing, parachute time, free play and she actually ventured away from my lap to sit close to Mrs. Brown, as she read to the kids....a huge step in independence for my doodle-bug!!
When we were done, we hung out at the playground for a bit, visited my Mom's flower shop to play with Fiona, ran a few errands and got home to have lunch.
After Emmy naps we are heading out to the pond to feed "our" ducks that come here every year....a male and female....we keep waiting for them to have babies, maybe this will be the year.

Date night
Tonight, the boy and I invited my parents to join us on our date....he was really excited about this, which makes me happy and it was nice to get out together.
We took a little ride in the rain to check out a new, very large shopping center in Coventry, RI. It wasn't bad driving, but I of course, managed to mess up the directions....I am so bad with new places....but we got there eventually and enjoyed doing some shopping.
We dined at Denny's, it was actually a cute one, verrrrry retro. We grabbed the circular booth by the window, DJ loved it and was really impressed that they serve breakfast 24/7. He and Grandma had breakfast while me and Gramps had turkey clubs (no tomatoes on mine).....big stretch for me, huh?!
Good times!!!!

Our morning
So it went pretty smooth, we got to the school and the kids went into a classroom with a group of teachers and specialists, they were encouraged to play and participate in activities as they were observed.
The parents and siblings went across the hall and filled out paperwork as the teacher went over the program with us.....pretty painless.
Avery did great, had no problem joining the kids and was fine with me leaving her, Emmy was a little concerned and kept asking where "sissy" was, but no meltdowns from my girls.
One little guy was screaming for his Mom and they brought him to her..... poor guy was so red, gooey and puffy from screaming, the Mom was mortified, but it happens. The director was great about it and reassured the Mom that most kids will go through an adjustment period when they start in September.
Surprisingly, I saw a couple of people that I know, I even saw the director of the preschool that Avery went to for a short time, so it must be as great as I have heard!
They will do the lottery at the end of March and we will know by the time that April vacation rolls around, whether Avery will be attending in September.
There are 60 openings available and 95 kids were at the screening, so wish us luck that it works out!

Fun Photos
RV Show
DJ and I have a standing date every Friday night, just me and him. We do different things, but I let him choose where we go.....Borders and dinner is a favorite choice.
Its a nice way to have time together without the little girls, he was an only child for 10 years before Avery was born, so he really likes to have my undivided attention and I like to have time with him too.
This past Friday we hit the town and went to the RV Show in Providence. DJ has a real passion for these things and trust me, he knows his stuff! So, we checked out the many, many makes and models of RVs at the show, he educated me on them and we took pictures.....I'm not sure if the sales guys realized that a 13 year old boy would prefer RVs to Monster Trucks, but it was all good!
We had fun.....but I am relived that this particular show only comes around twice a year because DJ loved it so much that he had his Dad take him again on Sunday!
